imm cologne 2020: an endless array of new chairs

It is the ultimate discipline for any designer: the chair. Some expect it to be so simple that it is almost invisible. For others, it must have such a presence that it captivates you immediately. Opinions may be divided on the design of chairs, but almost everyone can agree on one point: A chair has got to be comfortable and ergonomic. The ideal chair therefore combines a beautiful form and a pleasant seat.

And where better place to see a whole arsenal of chairs than at the imm cologne? Every subject in design is covered by the exhibitors at the Interior Business Event. Classic linear chairs continue to be popular, often combining steel and fabric or leather. And those who have the space can put together an ensemble of different models around their dining table.

The matching table to the chair

Speaking of which, tables are naturally also an essential at any interior design trade show. And with growing numbers of outdoor furniture manufacturers represented at imm cologne, there was a large selection to discover at the 2020 event. From small bistro tables and occasional tables to large outdoor tables for communal dining with friends, everything was on offer this year. Here we’ve put together a selection of chairs, tables and combinations from exhibitors who have appeared in the recently launched imm cologne platform New Moments and been awarded the That’s New label:

Drop from COR
Twist from Müller Möbelfabrikation
118 H from Thonet
GN 02 from Janua
echt.zeit from Team 7
Kim from Adeo
Caribe Chic from Ames
Fizz from Joli
Random from Ozzio
Memory Desk from Mas Mables

Slender radii made of lacquered tubular steel and puristic upholstery cores with covers in fabric or leather are unmistakable design features of the stackable Drop bar stool. Photo: COR

The elegant wooden chair range 118 by Sebastian Herkner for Thonet is now expanded with a new, comfortable bar stool version. The chairs of range 118 H have a small backrest, which provides decisive support for users. Photo: Thonet

Cut from a square slab, the three individual sections of the GN02 fit together like puzzle pieces, but are equally as striking apart. Photo: Janua

Only the best fillets of a tree are served here. Filigree steel cheeks stay in the background and focus on the table top. This consists of two natural posts of a tree trunk - with a fine joint in the middle. Photo: Team 7

This specially designed dining table is made entirely of solid wood. By completely filling the space of the ends of the table with the supporting "A" legs, the design remains visible in all aspects. Photo: Adeo

Inspired by the unique nature of the Colombian Huila region, which is shaped by the Tatacoa desert and the Rio Magdalena, ames presents the new caribe chic series. Photo: Ames, Andres Valbuena

The core of the Fizz collection is organically shaped aluminium. Slim, feminine lines and curves give these tables and chairs a visual lightness of touch. Photo: Joli

Extendable dining table with metal structure, wooden top, metal sliding mechanism. The brand-new finishing "Marble Glass" maintains the continuity of the design both when the table is closed and open, maintaining its own design elegance. Photo: Ozzio

Mas Marbles is placing marble in the centre of the narration, creating a juxtaposition between ancient wisdom and the unknown aspects of the future. Memory Desk depicts the values and the vision of Mas Marbles. Photo: Mas Mables
