dormiente company profile – sustainable products, sustainable company

For over 35 years, dormiente has been producing natural latex mattresses, natural bedding, slatted frames, solid wooden and upholstered beds, rigorously tested for pollutants, made in Germany, and using renewable raw materials. The once eco-pioneer has now become Germany's largest manufacturer of natural mattresses.

Heuchelheim, 01/2024

Since 1988, dormiente has been producing natural latex mattresses, solid wooden beds, and natural bedding in Germany, following the principles of ecology, orthopedics, and health. The location of this medium-sized manufacturing facility is in Heuchelheim, Hesse. With its expanded range over the years, dormiente can now cover almost all requirements for a health-friendly, natural sleeping space, evolving from an industry pioneer to one of the market leaders in the field of natural mattresses and natural bedding.

dormiente's sustainability strategy:

Renewable raw materials in organic quality, preferably regional and pollutant-controlled

dormiente processes only renewable raw materials such as natural latex, cotton, wool, hemp, solid wood, and others. The 100% natural latex with QUL certification, sometimes also with GOLS certification, is mainly sourced directly from their long-term partner in the country of origin. This ensures quality, environmental compatibility, and socially responsible working conditions through on-site verification. The cotton is organic-certified (kbA), sheep's wool is sourced, whenever possible, from controlled organic animal husbandry (kbT), and hemp mainly comes from Germany or other European countries. The wood for the oiled solid wooden beds and furniture is obtained from FSC- or PEFC-certified companies, primarily from Germany or other European countries. All mattress- and bedding materials undergo regular pollutant controls through QUL e.V. and EcoInstitut. For the sustainability of its products, dormiente received the 'Green Brands' award for the second time in 2023.

Environmentally friendly production, 'made in Germany,' and a sustainable corporate culture

Since 2021, dormiente has been certified for the sustainability of the entire company by the German Institute for Sustainability and Economics. Many factors contribute to this evaluation. For example, during the construction of the plant in Heuchelheim in 2017, energy-saving technologies such as a dedicated combined heat and power unit and LED lighting were considered. The company premises were greened in collaboration with NABU, and 100% green electricity is used. Even in the delivery of products, dormiente emphasizes sustainability. All bedding and home textiles are packaged in paper instead of plastic. Even the industry-standard plastic packaging used to protect mattresses during transport has been successfully replaced with renewable petrochemical-based packaging materials such as cellulose products with a high proportion of recycled paper. These ensure the same strength with lower emissions. The same social responsibility applied to raw material procurement also determines on-site working conditions, ensuring a reliable team of long-term employees. With over 60 employees at the Heuchelheim location, dormiente has established itself as an important employer for the region. The solid wooden beds and furniture are manufactured by a medium-sized German carpentry workshop for dormiente. For economic sustainability, the focus is primarily on specialized retailers. dormiente partners can benefit from various regional and national advertising and marketing activities to sustainably thrive in the market together.
