Gavin studied Furniture Design at Leeds Metropolitan in the 1990s. He had already spent prolonged periods in a hospital in woodland after operations to straighten his spine, & his love of nature, as well as his respect for the kindness & competence of the nursing & medical staff, stem from this time. Gavin had seen an overgrown bonsai as a child, which looked to him like a throne, and the seed for the Grown Furniture was sown.
Following a year in a London design studio, Gavin moved to Scotland to help in the reconstruction of a Saxon barn, & from there he went to California to work on eco-building projects. On his return to the UK in 2006, he finally began the long-nurtured project of growing chairs. Since then he has harvested a number of chairs, lamps & tables, plus exhibited & spoken worldwide.
