One highlight in keeping with the Bauhaus anniversary will be the most iconic product in the collection: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Chair. Knoll's history is closely interlinked with the Bauhaus. A close partnership between Mies van der Rohe and Knoll was initiated in 1948. The first masterpiece to be produced and distributed by Knoll was the Barcelona® Chair, one of Mies van der Rohe's most successful designs which he had created for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. In 1950 Mies van der Rohe revised the chair design, allowing for mass production. Mies, a close friend and mentor to Florence Knoll during her time at the Illinois Institute of Technology, formally granted Knoll the production rights to the Barcelona Chair and Stool in 1953. The designs immediately became a signature of the Knoll brand and have been built to Mies van der Rohe’s exacting standards ever since.
The entire chair is still made by hand. Over the nine decades since it first appeared, the Barcelona Chair has lost none of its modernity and elegance – it is a timeless classic of design history.
