Smart technology is a vital element in product development these days: the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 present new opportunities for developing and using established products and processes. Integrated sensors, RFID tags, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, and objects and interfaces that communicate together probably seem to some as the embodiment in real life of the Big Brother scenario. Despite that, we should examine the technological basis closely, get to know the opportunities and risks they present, and from that create truly smart materials, products and services that make all our lives safer and more comfortable at home, in the office and on the move. Smart interfaces help support people in the everyday world. Voice recognition combined with artificial intelligence makes it possible to read every desire from our lips in day-to-day life. Smart is there in the conception of numerous materials, be they new plastics or in the production of wood products. Smart can also be sustainable because good products simply last longer. This presentation shows how smart technology is finding its way into materials, products and processes in the home and office, and highlights the opportunities that arise for future product and spatial experiences.
